Happy Birthday, CSS! The Web Standards Project celebrates the 10th anniversary of the publication of the first Cascading Style Sheets level 1 recommendation, which was published on December 17, 1996. (The final recommendation came in 1999.) We bow deeply and graciously to Bert Bos and Håkon Wium Lie, the co-authors of that original document and two of the folks who were thinking about style on the Web during the earliest days of the W3C… and probably even before then.

To celebrate this milestone, the W3C has launched the CSS10 site, which gives a brief history of the technology, links to essays, a gallery of CSS-related materials, and a “hall of fame” area that recognizes important CSS-related sites. We’re honored that both WaSP and the CSS Samurai are among the sites listed, and we’re proud to be part of the history (as well as future!) of CSS.

Congratulations to the many people that have helped CSS reach this milestone!

It’s important to say that they have developped the new CSS Validator, that’s much better than the last one.

Not wanting to rain on the parade, but that timeline does point up how painfully slow the W3C process is these days.

CSS1 and CSS2 seem to have gone from working draft to recommendation in about a year. 2.1 was (apparently) started in 2002 and is still a working draft four years later. What’s that all about? Why have we all been howling at Microsoft for sitting on their hands all this time, but giving W3C an easy ride?

I hate to be a naysayer (yet I obviously do not hate it enough to stay my comments), but does it not strike anyone else as supremely ironic that the CSS10 web site created to celebrate the CSS anniversary uses an *invalid* cascading style sheet?

As of today (18h18 EST, 21 January 2007) the W3 validator returns the following error for CSS10′s cascading style sheet: “110 – #navigation li – Invalid number : text-shadow Property text-shadow doesn’t exist : 0 2px 4px #000″.

Perhaps that is tje best possible indication of how dismissive even the architects of web standards are of their own creation!
